Logan Bediamol won the open men and the boys 14-15 age group at the 26th annual Vissla/Hi-Tech/Lopez Surfbash, Saturday at Hookipa Beach Park.
Conditions cleaned up for the Hawaii Surfing Association sanctioned contest as competitors surfed in flawless overhead conditions at Pavillions surfbreak.
Bediamol, a 15-year-old sophomore at King Kekaulike, had never won an open men title. “I knew it was possible. I thought if I got the some good waves I could produce the scores I needed. My last wave didn’t look good when I got it but it kind of doubled up.”
Cody Young, a 16-year-old junior at King Kekaulike, finished second. “He got a nice wave that doubled up pretty good. I saw it when I paddled back and he surfed it pretty well.” Young came back to win the boys 16-17 division.
In October, Bediamol and Young represented Hawaii at the Vissla International Surfing Association world championships. Bediamol finished 13th out of 108 surfers in the 16 & under division while Young placed 11th.
“It was cool to compete with a team instead of individually,” Bediamol said. “From what I learned from the coaches there I will take on for the rest of my life, such a great help.”
Bediamol and Cody met up in the round seven repercharge heat at the ISA world contest. “We worked together, it was pretty cool,” Young said. “We’re really supportive of each other.”
Brisa Hennessey edged Summer Macedo to win the open women. Both won their preliminary heats before Macedo outscored Hennessey in the semi-final.
Hennessey, a 16-year-old from Kailua, finished second to Macedo at the ISA worlds. Last week Hennessey beat Macedo at the Barbados Independence Pro. They will face each other along with Dax McGill and Kayla Moore in the Target Maui Pro trials heat.
“We like alternate with each other,” Hennessey said. “She’s one of my really good friends, we always push each other. She was surfing amazing at worlds.”
Repeat champions included Surfing America national champion Eli Hanneman in the boys 12-13, Savanna Stone in the girls U14, and Jarred Gifford in the bodyboard. Other champions were Chase Anderson, U12, and Cash Berzolla, U10.
